Pixels Resolution and Print Size

I was under the assumption that the higher the megapixel a camera is the better the image quality will be. This however is not true, although a higher megapixel (and more expensive) camera will have better parts and therefore take better pictures, megapixels really only affect the size of prints you can make without re-larging the digital image. (Expanding an image to a larger resolution will cause large amounts of distortion)
Choose the megapixel camera you need based on the table below.
Pixels Pixel Resolution Maximum Print Size
0.3 megapixel 640 x 480 3 x 4 inches
1 megapixel 1152 x 864 5 x 7 inches
2 megapixel 1600 x 1200 8 x 10 inches
3 megapixel 2048 x 1536 10 x 13 inches
4 megapixel 2272 x 1704 11 x 15 inches
5 megapixel 2592 x 1944 13 x 17 inches

When buying a camera, get one that allows you to select different megapixel settings to record at. This way you can take high resolution pictures for big prints, but still take low resolution pictures to maximize your available flash memory card space.
